218M ‘Words with Friends’ players’ data reportedly stolen in Zynga hack

Image
Popular social game developer Zynga has reportedly become the latest victim of a massive data breach impacting some 218 million Words with Friends accounts. On September 12, the company disclosed that “certain player account information may have been illegally accessed by outside hackers,” but didn’t disclose any details about the scope of the breach and the number of players who may have had their information stolen. But now, there appears to be more than meets the eye in this case. According to Hacker News, gnosticplayers — the threat actor behind the sale of two colossal data dumps comprising of 747… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web https://ift.tt/2o6SYiy

Uber is testing a ‘record audio’ feature to help you feel safer during your ride

Image
Last week, Uber recently rolled out a bunch of safety features including an optional PIN number to authenticate your ride. But it might roll out more stuff soon. According to app researcher Jane Manchun Wong, the ride-hailing company is testing a feature in its mobile app that lets you record audio if you feel uncomfortable during your trip. The screenshot posted by Wong on Twitter suggests once you hit record, the audio will be captured in the background and sent to Uber Uber is testing "Record Audio" in case the rider is uncomfortable with the ride pic.twitter.com/btC5C0F3CN — Jane Manchun Wong (@wongmjane)… This story continues at The Next Web Or just read more coverage about: Uber from The Next Web https://ift.tt/2my5rM0

Apple just released the third iOS 13 patch in a week

Image
For those of you who just checked your iPhones or iPads and saw you have another software update available — no, you’re not going crazy. Apple today pushed out iOS 13.1.2, which will hopefully bring the number of bugs down to manageable levels. iOS 13.1.2 is the latest in a line of rapid fire updates, iOS 13.1.1 having come out last Friday and iOS 13.1 having come out just three days before that. The update notes state iOS 13.1.2 fixes a few major bugs, including the flashlight or the camera not working. It also fixes a few issues with Shortcuts and a stalled iCloud progress bar… This story continues at The Next Web Or just read more coverage about: iOS , Apple from The Next Web https://ift.tt/2o3WMRC

HP’s new Spectre x360 13 brings more power in a smaller, sleeker package

Image
HP has been seriously upping its design game the last few years, what with some svelte laptops and even one that was basically half leather. Today HP announced the latest in its renewed product line, the impressively sleek Spectre x360 13. The new laptop is 13 percent smaller than the previous generation, thanks in part to slimmer bezels on the display – particularly on the bottom, where many ‘bezel-less’ laptops had developed a rather unsightly chin. HP has maintained the camera above the display too, even including Windows Hello infrared facial detection in that tiny sliver. It makes for an… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web https://ift.tt/2n3ndHm

Review: The Atomic9 is an amazing loose-leaf vape under $60

Image
Cloudious9 is set to launch its innovative, inexpensive Atomic9 dry-herb vaporizer. I’ve had my mellow hands on a review unit for the last month and I’ve been nothing but impressed. I almost exclusively consume cannabis using a loose-leaf vaporizer. I prefer flower over concentrates or cartridges, but combustion ruins the flavor and (literally) burns through your herb much faster. Unfortunately dry-herb vapes are typically expensive and most of them just copycat each other. The Atomic9 is different. First off, it doesn’t cost as much as most dry-herb vapes. At $59.99 it’s the least expensive loose-leaf vape I’ve used, but it… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web https://ift.tt/2n3eMvH

Report: TikTok censored posts about Trump, Christianity, and LGBTQ relationships

Image
TikTok‘s 500 million users aren’t there to fight about politics, troll their enemies, or shitpost for lolz. They’re mostly a community of inclusive, fun-loving content creators who support one another. You can thank the Chinese government’s commitment to exporting censorship for that. A recent report from The Guardian revealed that ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, had policies in place that outright censored or shadow-banned certain content in specific areas. In China, of course, any mentions of topics that are already banned on the internet such as Tienanmen Square and political criticism were censored. But in other countries, the… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web https://ift.tt/2nbQBLs

A Red Dead Redemption 2 PC port looks more likely by the day

Image
As of this week, we know two things about Red Dead Redemption 2. One is that the game is almost certainly coming to PC, and the other is that Rockstar isn’t making any meaty single-player story DLC to accompany said release. The Australian ratings board last week inadvertently teased a potential new release for RDR2. The board rated it again, something it’d only do if there were another version of the game incoming. And since there’s no DLC to repackage with the game as a “Game of the Year Edition,” the balance of probability swings in the direction of a new… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web https://ift.tt/2o0fjhG

Exchanges form Crypto Rating Council, but pre-emptively admit its ratings mean nothing

Image
A set of cryptocurrency firms have banded together to create a “Crypto Rating Council” to help classify digital assets — but it unlikely to mean much. Founded by prominent exchanges like Coinbase, Bittrex, and Kraken, the group aims to rate digital assets from 1 to 5. Those that find themselves on the higher end of the scale are thought to be considered securities in the eyes of regulators. “Whether a crypto asset is a security—as opposed to a currency, a commodity, or something else—may trigger registration, licensing, and other operating obligations for financial services firms that offer digital asset services like exchange, investment management,… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web https://ift.tt/2mhaDnc

Video: Google’s budget Pixel 3a range are the phones it was born to make

Image
Google‘s Pixel range of devices have quickly established themselves as some of the most popular flagship phones around. They’ve enter that rarified segment of devices populated by the Apple and Samsungs of the world, but — as much as I like them — this has always seemed like a strange fit to me. There’s no doubting the Pixel 3 is a great phone, but it never felt as premium, polished, or slick as some of the other leading devices in the category. 72 hours with Apple’s $699 iPhone 11: Goddamn it’s great

In the past, I’ve written about why I like the size of the iPhone Xs, and how this was one of the reasons I used that phone as my primary device for over a year. So, when I got the iPhone 11 last week, I was initially skeptical about the size and screen. Fusion’s $6.4M cryptocurrency theft could be an inside job, firm says

Thieves have ransacked the Fusion Protocol, a blockchain-powered platform for exchanging “stablecoins,” stealing roughly $6.4 million worth of tokens. “[On] September 28th 2019, the Fusion swap wallet was compromised, resulting in theft of 10 million native FSN and 3.5 million ERC20 FSN token,” reads a Fusion Foundation blog dated September 29. The post then confirms the platform’s own wallet was the only one affected, as the firm had received no reports of compromised user wallets. Image
Social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp will be forced to share users’ ‘encrypted messages’ with British police as part of a new treaty between the US and the UK, according to multiple reports from Bloomberg and The Times. The accord is expected to be be signed next month, and will force social media firms to turn over information in assisting investigations into individuals suspected of serious criminal offenses such as terrorism and pedophilia. Bitcoin scammers impersonate Buckingham palace in attempted Brexit ruse

Image
Just when you thought Bitcoin scammers couldn’t stoop any lower, they’ve now taken to impersonating Buckingham Palace. The fraudsters have reportedly sent letters requesting donations to save the UK economy – because people would totally fall for that, right? The letters, dated September 16, claim this is the second time the Queen has reached out to a “certain number of people to save Great Britain’s economy” because “Brexit will happen quite quickly” – if only it were that easy! Review: Anker’s Soundcore Life Q20 headphones are perfect entry-level ANC cans

Anker’s newest noise-cancelling headphones, the Soundcore Life Q20, are an absolute delight. And I didn’t think they would be. We’ve reviewed a lot of Anker gear in the past. It’s a company we know and trust. However, the Soundcore Life Q20 is priced at just $59.99 (or £52 in the UK). Typically, when buying a pair of noise-cancelling cans, you don’t get much for less than $80. Spend less than that, and you’ll start encountering significant compromises. Not here. The lost art of injecting humanity into product design

Image
For too long, companies have relied on one quality in product design and delivery: newness. And why not? Adding cool new features to hardware, software, and gadgets enables companies to sell more products, enter new markets and attract a more diverse set of customers. It puts a fresh coat of paint on established goods while promoting the idea that a brand is innovating rather than standing still. Plus, releasing features incrementally is more affordable than constantly reinventing the wheel. All of that makes tremendous sense. The problem with incremental updates, however, is that they are typically so minimalistic in the… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web https://ift.tt/2nMEYdY

How life on Earth was boosted by an asteroid collision 446m years ago

Something mysterious happened nearly half a billion years ago that triggered one of the most important changes in the history of life on Earth. Suddenly, there was an explosion of species, with the biodiversity of invertebrate animals increasing from a very low level to something similar to what we see today. The most popular explanation for this “Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event” is that it was a result of an uncomfortably hot Earth cooling and eventually heading into an ice age. The sad and peculiar case of Satowallet’s alleged $1M cryptocurrency exit scam

Image
Nigerian cryptocurrency startup Satowallet has exit-scammed, making off with $1 million of its users’ money, reports International Business Times. According to company CEO Samuel Ben, however, the firm isn’t responsible for those losses. Instead, he says Telegram scammers tricked users into handing over access to their funds during an extended maintenance period. Ben also claimed the pesky scammers returned to steal more funds when Satowallet attempted to establish Know-Your-Customer policies earlier this year. Eventually, he firmly passed the buck to its hosting provider OVH, publishing rather peculiar claims in a blog. Unfortunately for Ben, Satowallet’s Medium page has been suspended,… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web https://ift.tt/2nKiz0B

Waterfield’s leather messenger bag gives my gadgets the treatment they deserve

Image
San Francisco-based bag company Waterfield has been in business since 1998, making a range of storage gear in small batches in the city. I’d heard of the brand and its penchant for quality over the past couple of years, and was glad to see for myself when Waterfield sent across its new Executive Leather Messenger bag. This is a seriously luxe affair, made of leather and built to lovingly hold your gadgets while you jet around the world. It’s exceptionally well made, so you can expect it to last for years to come. It also costs upwards of $380, depending… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web https://ift.tt/2nHS4ZJ

The Redmi K20 Pro is my favorite ever Xiaomi phone

Image
Last year, Xiaomi launched a sub-brand called Poco and announced a sub-$300 phone called the Pocophone F1. The phone packed the latest Qualcomm processor and sizable RAM in a plastic body. While it was great value for money, the company had cut corners in design and camera department to make it affordable. This year, the Chinese phone maker has introduced a new series – the K series – which dabbles in the same price range as the Pocophone F1, but sports a much better design and a triple camera on the rear on its Pro offering. I’ve been using the K20… This story continues at The Next Web Or just read more coverage about: Xiaomi from The Next Web https://ift.tt/2nQ1bI3

CHEAP: Light up your life with this Philips Hue starter kit for $55

Image
Welcome to CHEAP, our series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! It’s been a tough day at the office. You put your blood, sweat, and tears into your work, so you’re understandably drained. Normal people make it home by 6PM, but you work late shifts, so it’s already dark when you walk into your digs. You take your dirty clothes off and grab a seat, releasing a deep sigh of relief. “Ah, crap, I forgot to turn the lights on,” it occurs to you. Aw, how convenient it would be if you could just do that without having… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web https://ift.tt/2mgWLtd

US detains Bitcoin fraudster to prevent him from escaping to Canada

Image
A Canadian man alleged to have conned an Oregonian woman out of $230,000 worth of Bitcoin is being held in prison so that he doesn’t flee the US to Canada. US Attorney Quinn Harrington said they were concerned that the perpetrator would flee and then fight extradition. The accused, Karanjit Singh Khatkar, purportedly made two phone calls to his brother advising him to stay out of the US to avoid arrest, Oregon Live reports. “[The] defendant told his brother to stay in Canada because he knows he can delay or avoid justice there,” Harrington said to the court.
