Facebook’s Secret Crush feature wants to help you find friends who are, like, totally obsessed with you

Image
Facebook announced at its F8 conference today a new feature to its Dating repertoire, this one apparently designed to help single minglers poach potential paramours from their Friends by adding them to an ostensibly private list of people you’re crushing on. Here’s how this is supposed to go down: You add up to nine people to a “Secret Crush” list. After you do, those nine people will receive an alert telling them someone has a crush on them. They can add their own secret crushes, and if they add you, you both get a notification and can chat about it… This story continues at The Next Web Or just read more coverage about: Facebook from The Next Web http://bit.ly/2UQ5ttR

Vava’s 4K Ultra Short Throw Laser Projector is stunning and versatile, with a few caveats

Image
As big as modern TVs are, there’s nothing quite like watching a movie on a giant projected image. Unfortunately getting a decent home theater experience at home usually requires a great deal of work and commitment, forcing you to carefully position an overhead projection and run wires over long stretches. It’s a pain, especially if you ever want to move your setup to another location, or don’t have the time and energy to make it happen. That’s where Ultra Short Throw (UST) Projectors come in. UST projectors solve many of the inconveniences of traditional projectors by allowing you to display… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web http://bit.ly/2PHhwbY

Why Switzerland is a perfect launchpad for Europe’s first large-scale 5G mobile network

Image
Switzerland is a country best known for having a high standard of living, stunning alpine vistas, and a banking industry that defies scrutiny. But from tomorrow, it’ll also be known as the first European country to have a commercially-available 5G smartphone service. On May 1, OPPO will launch the 5G version of its Reno handset in the country, available exclusively on the country’s biggest network, Swisscom. This is, in effect, Europe’s first commercially available 5G smartphone. Prices for the Reno 5G will start from CHF 999 (roughly $980). That’s more than double the cost of the 4G OPPO Reno handset,… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web http://bit.ly/2vs4MMU

These have ‘protected designation of origin‘ (PDO) status, which highlights speciality foods produced in localized regions to protect the integrity of their production. “The cheese gets its name from the commune of Rocamadour with its blessed Virgin Mary sanctuary. Bad news for anyone who wanted that ridiculous Energizer phone

Hello! Cast your mind back a few months to February, when we encountered a ridiculous Energizer-branded smartphone at MWC. Measuring several inches thick and packing a bonkers 18,000 mAh battery, it was easily the most memorable gadget from the show. Do you remember how thick it was? Remember how holding the Energizer P18K Pop felt like you were carrying a thick paperback book filled with turgid Serbian poetry? Bitcoiners are using cryptocurrency mixers three times more often than they were nine months ago. Mixed cryptocurrency transactions – or CoinJoins – now account for over 4 percent of all Bitcoin transactions, according to a report from blockchain data firm Long Hash. In doing so, it attempts to obscure the connection between the sender and recipient in each transaction. The digital farming revolution will cost workers their power, dignity, and possibly their jobs

Image
There’s a lot of talk about digital technology and smart cities, but what about smart farms? Many of us still have a romantic view of farmers surveying rolling hills and farm kids cuddling calves, but our food in Canada increasingly comes from industrial-scale factory farms and vast glass and steel forests of greenhouses. While the social and environmental consequences of agri-food industrialization are fairly well understood, issues around digital technology are now just emerging. 3 best ways to optimize your B2B sales funnel

Image
Your B2B sales funnel is an incredibly important part of your business, but it’s also one of the most difficult to measure when it comes to efficiency. There are so many variables at play — including how efficient your software is, how effective your content is, and how persuasive your salespeople are — that it can be difficult to know how you’re doing. Frustration around how to measure your sales cycle can often be compounded by the fact that your lead’s behavior and needs are changing. Can we trust Ireland to enforce GDPR on big tech?

GDPR is complicated business; even people like me who try to keep up with all its developments struggle to understand this mammoth set of European regulations and its effects. Vitalik Buterin schools Elon Musk on Ethereum’s best use-cases

Amazon wants to deliver crime news and fear to Ring doorbell owners

Even the Galaxy S10 couldn’t save Samsung from a 60% drop in profits last quarter

An indie game called A Dark Room vanished from the Nintendo eShop over the weekend after its creator revealed he’d sneaked a code editor into it as an “Easter egg.” The developers dismayed reaction seems almost comically naive given Nintendo‘s dim view of any kinds of non-game software on its consoles. The top social media dos and don’ts for recruiters

Image
It seems like the world is getting more social all the time: social media boasts nearly 3.2 billion users worldwide, representing a 13 percent increase year-over-year, with Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp leading the charge in terms of user bases. Considering that it represents nearly half the population of planet Earth, I think it’s safe to say that social media is too big to ignore — especially if you’re a recruiter. Even though just about everyone acknowledges that social media is the holy grail for talent acquisition, not everyone has figured out the ideal way to leverage platforms like Facebook and… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web http://bit.ly/2PzIlPa

Our smartphone addiction isn’t just bad for our mental health, it’s a security risk

Image
We’ve all had the “smartphone conversation.” The one about our unhealthy obsession and inability to put phones down. This fear is legitimized by research, showing that we spend approximately one third of our waking hours on our mobile devices – just over five hours per day. However, while we all might be concerned about this phenomenon, there is one group that could not be happier: cybercriminals. Society’s smartphone addiction is a gold mine for cybercriminals, as consumers are significantly less security savvy on their smartphones than on traditional computers. So, although experts often cite the concerning mental and physical health… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web http://bit.ly/2GReDTa

The SETI screensaver shows us what the internet could’ve been

Image
When I was twelve years old, I became obsessed with a screen saver. The screen saver pictured above, to be precise; you can watch its full glory here. It had multicolored lines that rose up inside a frame, like a kind of three-dimensional bar graph, and a whole lot of incomprehensible text and numbers that whizzed around above. My parents were slow to bring new technology into our home, justifiably cautious about both the financial outlay and its effect on our ability to do our homework. As a result, there were a couple of years when we didn’t yet have dial-up internet… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web http://bit.ly/2Pw74Uk

Here’s why privately-owned cities are a terrible idea

Image
Over the last five years, something strange has happened at the eastern edge of Karachi, the crowded megalopolis in southern Pakistan. From scratch, a new city has appeared, complete with its own smooth asphalt highways, schools, hospitals, housing options ranging from modest apartment blocks to posh farmhouses — and, of course, an imitation Eiffel Tower. This is Bahria Town Karachi, an ambitious housing development ultimately planned to cover more than 45,000 acres of land — which is about the same size as Washington, D.C. In Pakistan, its name is synonymous with one man: property developer Malik Riaz, one of the ten richest people in the… This story continues at The Next Web from The Next Web http://bit.ly/2IY5fyk
